A military aircraft of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) with the chief of army staff, Lt General Ibrahim Attahiru on board, has crashed around the Kaduna international airport.
According to multiple media reports, the chief of army staff died in the air crash while on an official trip to Kaduna State.
Edward Gabkwet, Air Force spokesman, confirmed the incident on Friday but did not name the casualties.
“The immediate cause of the crash is still being ascertained,” he said
According to reports, eight persons including few of his aides were involved in the accident, but the identity of the victims hadn’t been confirmed at the time of the report.
The crash was also said to have occurred around 6pm.
“They were almost landing when the aircraft lost its balance and crashed inside the bush,” a source said.
Another source said Attahiru was on his way to Kaduna to attend a passing-out parade for some recruits scheduled for Saturday, adding that “heavy rain” contributed to the crash.
Although the Nigerian Army is yet to release an official statement about Attahiru’s death.
